Male Ukrainian name (Адам)
Adam (Ukrainian: Адам) is a male name of Hebrew origin meaning «man», «created from earth», «red» (by the colour of earth or skin). The most ancient human name in the biblical tradition.
The name derives from Hebrew אָדָם (ʾāḏām, «man, human»), related to ʾaḏāmâ («earth, soil») and the adjective ʾāḏom («red») — alluding to the creation of the first human from reddish soil. According to the Book of Genesis, Adam is the first human, created by God in the Garden of Eden, the forefather of humankind. In the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim traditions the name became a universal symbol of human nature and humanity itself. It came to the Slavs through Church-Slavonic literature; in the Ukrainian tradition Adam is an ancient name, especially common in Western Ukraine. Among the most renowned bearers is Adam Mickiewicz (1798–1855), Polish-Ukrainian Romantic poet.
From Hebrew ʾāḏām («man»), connected with ʾaḏāmâ («earth, soil») and ʾāḏom («red»).
