Meaning

Andrii (Ukrainian: Андрій) is a male name of Greek origin meaning «manly», «brave», or «valiant».

Origin & History

The name derives from Ancient Greek Ἀνδρέας (Andreas), formed from ἀνδρεῖος (andreios, «manly, brave») and ἀνήρ (anēr, «man»). In Christian tradition the name is associated with the Apostle Andrew the First-Called, one of the twelve disciples of Christ and the brother of the Apostle Peter. According to Byzantine tradition, the Apostle Andrew preached on the banks of the Dnipro River and blessed the hills where Kyiv would later rise; for this reason Saint Andrew is an especially revered patron of Ukraine. The name has been firmly established in the Ukrainian tradition since the earliest times and remains one of the most popular male names today.

Etymology & Roots

From Ancient Greek Andreas, derived from andreios («manly, brave»); ultimate root anēr / aner («man»).
