Male Ukrainian name (Антон)
Anton (Ukrainian: Антон) is a male name of Latin origin, traditionally interpreted as «worthy of praise», «one worth emulating». The precise etymology reaches into Etruscan roots.
The name derives from the ancient Roman gens Antonius — one of the most famous patrician families of Rome, which produced, among others, the general Mark Antony (c. 83–30 BC), companion of Caesar and husband of Cleopatra. The precise etymology of the word is unclear; some scholars see Etruscan roots in it. In Christian tradition Anton entered through Saint Anthony the Great (c. 251–356), an Egyptian hermit and founder of monasticism. Of special importance to Ukrainian history is the figure of Saint Anthony of the Caves (11th century) — founder of the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery, from which monastic life on Rus began.
From Latin Antonius — an ancient Roman gens name; the etymology is unclear, possibly of Etruscan origin; traditionally associated with the meaning «worthy of praise».
