Meaning

Dmytro (Ukrainian: Дмитро) is a male name of Greek origin meaning «dedicated to Demeter», «belonging to Demeter» — the ancient Greek goddess of agriculture and fertility.

Origin & History

The name derives from Ancient Greek Δημήτριος (Dēmḗtrios), an adjective formed from the name of the goddess Δημήτηρ (Dēmḗtēr, Demeter, «Earth Mother»). In the Greco-Roman world it was common among farmers and tillers as a symbol of the goddess's protection over the harvest. In Christian tradition the name entered through the veneration of Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica (c. 270–306), an early martyr and patron of soldiers. The Ukrainian form Dmytro, with its characteristic vowel reduction, is the native folk variant — distinct from the Church-Slavonic Dimitrii. The name was borne by numerous hetmans, including Dmytro Vyshnevetsky-Baida, the legendary founder of the Zaporozhian Sich.

Etymology & Roots

From Greek Dēmētrios («dedicated to Demeter»); from da / dē («earth») + mētēr («mother») — Demeter, goddess of harvest.
