Male Ukrainian name (Едуард)
Eduard (Ukrainian: Едуард) is a male name of Old English origin meaning «guardian of prosperity», «keeper of wealth», «protector of happiness».
The name derives from Old English Ēadweard, composed of ēad («wealth, prosperity, happiness») and weard («guardian, keeper»). It belongs to the oldest layer of Anglo-Saxon names that survived the Norman conquest and became established in European royal dynasties. The name was made especially famous by King Edward the Confessor (c. 1003–1066), one of the last Anglo-Saxon kings of England, canonized in the 12th century. Several English kings of later eras have also borne it. Eduard reached the Slavs from Western Europe in the 19th century; in Ukraine it became widespread in the 20th century.
From Old English Ēadweard: ēad («wealth, prosperity») + weard («guardian, keeper») — «guardian of prosperity».
