Meaning

Halyna (Ukrainian: Галина) is a female name of Greek origin meaning «calm», «stillness (at sea)», «silence», «serenity». A name of marine stillness and inner peace.

Origin & History

The name derives from Ancient Greek Γαλήνη (Galḗnē, «calm, sea stillness, peace»). In ancient Greek mythology, Galene is one of the Nereids — daughters of the sea god Nereus, the personification of a calm sea. In Christian tradition the name entered through the holy martyr Halyna of Corinth (3rd century), who suffered for the faith alongside Saint Codratus. It came to the Slavs through the Byzantine onomasticon. In Ukraine, Halyna is one of the most popular female names of the 20th century; the short affectionate form Halya became especially folksy. The name has no closely related masculine form.

Etymology & Roots

From Ancient Greek Galḗnē («calm, sea stillness, silence»); the name of a Nereid — the personification of the calm sea.
