Female Ukrainian name (Ганна)
Hanna (Ukrainian: Ганна) is a female name of Hebrew origin, the native Ukrainian folk form of the name Anna; it means «grace», «mercy of the Lord», «one upon whom God has looked with favour».
The name derives from Hebrew חַנָּה (Ḥannāh, «grace, mercy»). In the Old Testament, Hannah is the mother of the prophet Samuel; her prayer is one of the best-known biblical prayers about a child. In Christian tradition, Saint Anna — mother of the Most Holy Theotokos and grandmother of Jesus Christ — is especially venerated. The name came to the Slavs through Greco-Byzantine (Ἄννα, Ánna) and Church-Slavonic literature. The Ukrainian folk form Hanna — with initial «г» — reflects the Ukrainian phonetic feature of substituting «h» for «х» / «h»; the bookish form Anna is used in parallel. Thanks to the veneration of Saint Anna, Hanna is one of the oldest and most common female names in Ukraine.
From Hebrew Ḥannāh («grace, mercy»); the Ukrainian form Hanna is the native folk variant (with h- instead of h-), parallel to the bookish Anna.
