Male Ukrainian name (Геннадій)
Hennadii (Ukrainian: Геннадій) is a male name of Greek origin meaning «noble», «of noble birth»; close in meaning to Yevhen.
The name derives from Ancient Greek Γεννάδιος (Gennádios), formed from γενναῖος (gennaîos, «noble, highborn»), itself related to γένος (genos, «kin, birth»). In the Greco-Byzantine onomasticon the name was borne by several saints and church figures — notably Saint Gennadius I, Patriarch of Constantinople (5th century), and Gennadius II Scholarius, the first Ecumenical Patriarch after the fall of Constantinople (15th century). The name came to Kyivan Rus through church literature; in the Ukrainian tradition it was first established among the clergy and later spread widely as a secular name in the 20th century.
From Ancient Greek Gennádios («noble, highborn»), from gennaîos («noble») ← genos («kin»).
