Meaning

Heorhii (Ukrainian: Георгій) is a male name of Greek origin meaning «farmer», «one who tills the earth». The bookish, ecclesiastical form of the name, whose native Ukrainian folk counterpart is Yurii.

Origin & History

The name derives from Ancient Greek Γεώργιος (Geōrgios), composed of gē («earth») and ergon («work»). In Christian tradition Heorhii entered above all through veneration of Saint George the Victorious (c. 275/281–303), an early martyr and patron of warriors, knighthood, and farmers. It was one of the first names to enter the Greco-Byzantine onomasticon; it came to Kyivan Rus with Christianization in the 10th century. In the Ukrainian tradition two forms coexist: the bookish, ecclesiastical Heorhii and the native folk phonetic form Yurii. Both are in active use today.

Etymology & Roots

From Ancient Greek Geōrgios: gē («earth») + ergon («work») — «farmer».
