Meaning

Hlib (Ukrainian: Гліб) is a male name of Old Scandinavian origin, interpreted as «under God's protection», «heir of God» (or «descendant of a divine lineage»). One of the first princely names of Kyivan Rus.

Origin & History

The name derives from Old Norse Guðleifr, formed from guð («God») and leif («heir, descendant, the one who remains»). It was brought to Rus by the Varangians in the 10th–11th centuries. The name became deeply rooted in the Ukrainian tradition thanks to veneration of the holy noble prince Hlib Volodymyrovych (early 11th century) — son of Grand Prince Volodymyr the Baptizer, murdered together with his brother Borys on the orders of their half-brother Sviatopolk the Accursed. The brothers Borys and Hlib became the first Rus saints; their veneration is a cornerstone of East Slavic Christian culture. In Ukraine Hlib is an ancient and especially honoured name.

Etymology & Roots

From Old Norse Guðleifr: guð («God») + leif («heir, descendant») — «heir of God».
