Male Ukrainian name (Кирило)
Kyrylo (Ukrainian: Кирило) is a male name of Greek origin meaning «lordly», «belonging to the Lord», «ruler». A sonorous and majestic name.
The name derives from Ancient Greek Κύριλλος (Kýrillos), formed from κύριος (kýrios, «lord, master, ruler»). In Christian tradition Kyrylo entered through several great saints — notably Saint Cyril of Alexandria (5th century), defender of the Mother of God at the Council of Ephesus. For Slavic culture the central figure is Saint Cyril the Philosopher (c. 826–869) — co-creator with his brother Methodius of the Slavic alphabet (Glagolitic) and the first Slavic literary translation. Thanks to the Thessalonican brothers, Kyrylo carries special symbolic weight for the entire Slavic world. In the Ukrainian tradition the name was borne by outstanding figures — including Kyrylo Rozumovsky, the last Hetman of the Zaporozhian Host (18th century).
From Ancient Greek Kýrillos, from kýrios («lord, master, ruler») — «lordly, of the Lord».
