Female Ukrainian name (Лариса)
Larysa (Ukrainian: Лариса) is a female name of Greek origin, traditionally interpreted as «gull», «pleasant, affectionate», or «one from the city of Larissa» (an ancient city in Thessaly).
The etymology of the name is disputed. The most common version connects it with Ancient Greek Λάρισα (Lárisa) — the name of an ancient city in Thessaly, one of the oldest Greek cities. Another version derives the name from λάρος (láros, «gull»). A third — from an adjective meaning «pleasant, affectionate». In Christian tradition Larysa entered through the holy martyr Larysa the Goth (4th century), who suffered for her faith among the Goths. The name holds special meaning for Ukrainian culture thanks to Lesya Ukrainka (Larysa Kosach-Kvitka, 1871–1913) — one of the greatest Ukrainian writers, whose pseudonym became a national symbol in its own right. In the 20th century, Larysa was one of the popular female names in Ukraine.
Disputed: 1) from the toponym Λάρισα (ancient city in Thessaly); 2) from Greek láros («gull»); 3) from an adjective meaning «pleasant, affectionate».
