Male Ukrainian name (Леонід)
Leonid (Ukrainian: Леонід) is a male name of Greek origin meaning «son of the lion», «descendant of the lion», «lion-like».
The name derives from Ancient Greek Λεωνίδας (Leōnídās), composed of λέων (leōn, «lion») and the patronymic suffix -ίδας (-idas, «son, descendant»). Its most famous ancient bearer was Leonidas I of Sparta (c. 540–480 BC), who led the three hundred Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae. The name entered the Christian onomasticon through several early Christian saints, notably Saint Leonidas of Alexandria, the father of Origen. It reached the Slavs through Byzantine literature; in Ukrainian usage Leonid became established especially in the 20th century.
From Greek Leōnídas: leōn («lion») + -idas (patronymic suffix) — «son of the lion».
