Male Ukrainian name (Лев)
Lev (Ukrainian: Лев) is a male name of Greek-Latin origin meaning «lion» — a symbol of regal strength, courage, and nobility.
The name comes directly from Greek λέων (léōn) and Latin leo, meaning «lion». In ancient Greek and Roman tradition the lion symbolized regal power and heroic strength. In Christian tradition Lev entered through several great Popes of Rome — notably Saint Leo I the Great (5th century), who halted Attila's march on Rome — as well as Byzantine emperors (Leo III the Isaurian, Leo VI the Wise). Of special historical importance for Ukraine is King Lev Danylovych (1228–1301), son of Danylo of Halych, after whom the city of Lviv — the capital of Galicia — is named. In the Ukrainian tradition, Lev is one of the most ancient princely names.
From Greek léōn / Latin leo — «lion». In both languages the word probably derives from an older Mediterranean or Egyptian source; it reached the Slavs through church literature.
