Mustafa (Ukrainian: Мустафа) is a male name of Arabic origin meaning «chosen», «the one elected (by God)». One of the chief epithets of the Prophet Muhammad in Islamic tradition.
The name derives from Arabic مصطفى (Muṣṭafā), formed from the verb iṣṭafā («to choose, to prefer»). In Islamic tradition al-Muṣṭafā («The Chosen One») is one of the principal epithets of the Prophet Muhammad, emphasizing his selection by God for his prophetic mission. The name was borne by four Ottoman sultans and hundreds of prominent figures of the Islamic world. The best-known modern bearer is Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938) — founder of the modern Republic of Turkey. In Ukraine Mustafa is a traditional name among the Crimean Tatar and Muslim communities.
