Male Ukrainian name (Микита)
Mykyta (Ukrainian: Микита) is a male name of Greek origin meaning «victor», «one who achieves victory».
The name derives from Ancient Greek Νικήτας (Nikḗtās), formed from νίκη (nikē, «victory»). In the Greco-Byzantine tradition it was borne by numerous saints — among them Saint Niketas the Goth (4th century), a martyr especially venerated in Kyivan Rus. The name came to Kyiv directly with Christianization; chronicles mention numerous bearers — princes and warriors. The Ukrainian folk form Mykyta is native, with the characteristic vowel reduction and Ukrainian «и» (in contrast with Russian Nikita).
From Ancient Greek Nikḗtās, from nikē («victory») — «victor».
Equivalents in other languages: Niketas (Greek, English), Nichita (Moldovan), Nikita (Russian, Belarusian), Mikita (Belarusian).
