Meaning

Nadiia (Ukrainian: Надія) is a female name of Slavic origin, a native translation of Greek Ἐλπίς (Elpis) — «hope». One of the three Christian virtues.

Origin & History

The name is formed from Proto-Slavic *naděja («hope, expectation») and is an exact Slavic calque of Greek Ἐλπίς (Elpís, «hope»). In Christian tradition the name Nadiia belongs to the triad of daughters of the holy martyr Sophia — Faith, Hope, Love — who suffered for their faith in Rome under Emperor Hadrian (2nd century); the mother Sophia and her three daughters personify the four main Christian virtues. The Ukrainian form Nadiia is the native folk variant, with the characteristic final -ія. In the 20th–21st centuries it has been one of the most popular female names in Ukraine. Notable bearers include Nadiya Svitlychna (Ukrainian poet and human rights defender).

Etymology & Roots

From Proto-Slavic *naděja («hope, expectation»); a Slavic calque of Greek Elpis («hope»).
