Meaning

Nataliia (Ukrainian: Наталія) is a female name of Latin origin meaning «natural», «native», «one belonging to birth» — connected with the day of the Nativity of Christ.

Origin & History

The name derives from Latin Natalia, formed from dies natalis Domini — «the day of the Lord's birth» (Christmas). Hence Nataliia has long meant «Christmas-born», «a child born on Christmas». In Christian tradition it entered through Saint Natalia of Nicomedia (3rd–4th century), wife of Adrian and a martyr for the faith together with her husband. The name came to Kyivan Rus through the Byzantine onomasticon. The Ukrainian form Nataliia (with final -ія) is the traditional native version, alongside the parallel shorter Natalia. The name became one of the most popular female names in 20th–21st-century Ukraine.

Etymology & Roots

From Latin Natalia, derived from dies natalis Domini («the day of the Lord's birth», Christmas); root natus («born»).
