Male Ukrainian name (Орест)
Orest (Ukrainian: Орест) is a male name of Greek origin meaning «mountainous», «one from the mountains», «mountain-dweller».
The name derives from Ancient Greek Ὀρέστης (Oréstēs), formed from ὄρος (oros, «mountain»). In ancient Greek mythology, Orestes is the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, the central character of the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides — the image of a man who avenges his murdered father and passes through purification. In Christian tradition the name entered through Saint Orestes of Tyana (4th century), a martyr. In Ukrainian culture Orest gained popularity in the 19th–20th centuries, especially in Western Ukraine; it was borne, among others, by the eminent Ukrainian historian and politician Orest Levytsky.
From Ancient Greek Oréstēs, from oros («mountain») — «mountainous, one from the mountains».
