Male Ukrainian name (Ростислав)
Rostyslav (Ukrainian: Ростислав) is a male name of Slavic origin meaning «one whose glory grows», «may he grow in glory».
The name is formed from two Proto-Slavic roots: *orsti / *rosti («to grow, to increase») and *slava («glory»). Its most famous bearer was the Great Moravian prince Rostislav (reigned c. 846–870), at whose initiative the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius arrived in Great Moravia with their educational mission — an event of decisive importance for Slavic literacy and the Christianization of the Slavs. In Kyivan Rus the name was borne by numerous princes of the Rurikid dynasty — among them Rostislav Volodymyrovych, prince of Tmutarakan (11th century). In Ukraine Rostyslav is an ancient, venerated name with a clear Slavic tradition.
Proto-Slavic roots: orsti / rosti («to grow») + slava («glory»); composite sense «one whose glory grows».
