Meaning

Stanislav (Ukrainian: Станіслав) is a male name of Slavic origin meaning «one who attained glory», «one who stood (established himself) in glory».

Origin & History

The name is formed from two Proto-Slavic roots: *stati («to stand, become, become established») and *slava («glory»). It became especially venerated in the Polish and Czech tradition thanks to Saint Stanislaus of Szczepanów (c. 1030–1079), Bishop of Kraków and martyr, now the national patron saint of Poland. The Ukrainian form Stanislav is close to the Polish and Czech-Slovak versions; in Ukrainian usage it gained ground in the 19th–20th centuries, mainly in Western Ukraine.

Etymology & Roots

Proto-Slavic roots: stati («to stand, become established») + slava («glory»); composite sense «one who became glorious».
