Male Ukrainian name (Святослав)
Sviatoslav (Ukrainian: Святослав) is a male name of Slavic origin meaning «holy glory», «one who possesses holy glory». One of the oldest and most influential princely names of Kyivan Rus.
The name is formed from two Proto-Slavic roots: *svętъ («holy, sanctified, blessed») and *slava («glory, honour»). It was made famous by Grand Prince Sviatoslav Ihorevych of Kyiv (c. 942–972) — one of the mightiest rulers of early Rus, a brilliant general who significantly expanded the realm and crushed the Khazar Khaganate. Later the name was borne by Sviatoslav Yaroslavych, prince of Chernihiv, and Sviatoslav Vsevolodovych, prince of Kyiv — whose appeal in «The Tale of Ihor's Campaign» («the golden word of Sviatoslav») became one of the key moments of Old Rus literature. Thanks to its historical glory, Sviatoslav is deeply rooted in Ukrainian culture.
Proto-Slavic roots: svętŭ («holy») + slava («glory»); composite sense «holy glory».
