Meaning

Tamara (Ukrainian: Тамара) is a female name of Hebrew origin meaning «palm», «date palm» — a symbol of beauty, slenderness, and fruitfulness in the Near Eastern tradition.

Origin & History

The name derives from Hebrew תָּמָר (Tāmār, «palm, date palm»). In the Old Testament, the name is borne by several women — among them Tamar, daughter of King David (2 Samuel 13). The most famous bearer became Queen Tamar of Georgia (c. 1160–1213) — a great ruler of Georgia, under whom medieval Georgia reached its greatest flourishing and who became one of the most revered female figures in the East Christian world. The name came to the Slavs primarily through Georgian and Church-Slavonic literature. In Ukraine Tamara is an old, venerated name, especially popular in the 20th century.

Etymology & Roots

From Hebrew Tāmār («palm, date palm») — a symbol of beauty and slenderness.
