Female Ukrainian name (Тетяна)
Tetiana (Ukrainian: Тетяна) is a female name of Latin origin, traditionally interpreted as «founder», «one belonging to the Tatii gens», or «peace-loving». One of the most common female names in Ukraine.
The name derives from the ancient Roman gens name Tatiana — the feminine form of the cognomen Tatius. The Sabine king Titus Tatius ruled Rome together with Romulus in the city's legendary early period; this feminine cognomen derives from him. In Christian tradition Tetiana entered through Saint Tatiana of Rome (3rd century) — martyred for refusing to renounce her faith under Emperor Alexander Severus. Saint Tatiana's Day (25 January) became the day of students in many Orthodox countries (a tradition founded in the Russian Empire after the opening of Moscow University in 1755). The Ukrainian form Tetiana is the native folk variant, with the characteristic «я».
From Latin Tatiana — the feminine form of the cognomen Tatius (of the Sabine gens of king Titus Tatius); often linked with an Etruscan root meaning «founder».
