Male Ukrainian name (Вадим)
Vadym (Ukrainian: Вадим) is a male name of Slavic origin, traditionally interpreted as «leader», «one who leads», «persuasive, attractive». An alternative theory connects it to the Persian-Latin name of an early Christian martyr.
The etymology of the name is disputed. One version derives it from Proto-Slavic *vaditi («to lead, persuade, attract») and interprets it as «one who leads or stands out among others» — which fits well with the figure of the Old Rus prince Vadym the Brave, the Novgorodian leader who, by chronicle tradition, led an uprising against the Varangians during Rurik's time. Another version connects the name with Latin Bademus — Saint Vadim of Persia (†376), archimandrite of Kashkar, venerated in Eastern Christianity. In Ukrainian usage, Vadym is an old name that became especially popular in the 20th century.
Etymology disputed: 1) Proto-Slavic *vaditi («to lead, persuade»); 2) loaned from the name of the Persian saint Bademus.
