Meaning

Viacheslav (Ukrainian: В'ячеслав) is a male name of Slavic origin meaning «one who attained greater glory», «more glorious», «greatly renowned». A purely Slavic name of the early Christian era.

Origin & History

The name is formed from two Proto-Slavic roots: *vęt- / *věty- («greater, more significant») and *slava («glory»). Several medieval rulers bore it — the best known being the Czech prince and saint Wenceslas I (c. 907–935), who became one of the symbols of the Czech state; his image is sung in the famous English Christmas carol «Good King Wenceslas». In Kyivan Rus the name was borne by Vyacheslav Volodymyrovych, prince of Pereyaslav, son of Volodymyr Monomakh. In Ukraine Viacheslav is a name in stable use throughout the 20th century and to this day.

Etymology & Roots

Proto-Slavic roots: *vęt- / *věty- («greater, more significant») + *slava («glory»); composite sense «more glorious».
