Meaning

Viktoriia (Ukrainian: Вікторія) is a female name of Latin origin meaning «victory» — the feminine form of Viktor; a personification of the ancient Roman goddess of victory.

Origin & History

The name derives from Latin Victoria — a word meaning «victory» and at the same time the name of the ancient Roman goddess of victory (counterpart to the Greek Nike). In Roman tradition the goddess Victoria was a winged figure with a laurel wreath who crowned the victors. In Christian tradition the name entered through several early Christian saints — among them Victoria of Cordoba (2nd century) and Victoria of Solothurn (3rd century). The name became especially popular in the English-speaking world thanks to Queen Victoria (1819–1901), whose reign gave the historical era its name — the «Victorian Age». It came to the Slavs through the Latin Church tradition; in Ukraine Viktoriia has been a favourite female name in recent decades.

Etymology & Roots

From Latin Victoria — «victory»; the name of the ancient Roman goddess of victory (a calque of Greek Nike).
