Male Ukrainian name (Віталій)
Vitalii (Ukrainian: Віталій) is a male name of Latin origin meaning «vital», «full of life», «life-giving».
The name derives from the Latin adjective vitalis («vital, alive, life-giving»), formed from vita («life»). In Roman tradition, names with the root vita- (Vitalis, Vitalianus) expressed wishes for a long, full life and were often given to children as a symbolic charm. The name entered the Christian tradition through several early martyrs, the best-known being Saint Vitalis of Milan (Vitalis Mediolanensis), and spread through Europe via the Latin Christian tradition. It reached the Slavic peoples later, mostly through Byzantine and Western Christian literature, and became particularly widespread in 20th-century Ukraine.
From Latin vitalis («vital, alive») ← vita («life»).
