Male Ukrainian name (Юліан)
Yulian (Ukrainian: Юліан) is a male name of Latin origin meaning «belonging to the Julii gens», «of the Julii» — the masculine form of the name Yuliia.
The name derives from Latin Iulianus — a derivative of the gens name Iulius. The most famous ancient bearer is the Roman emperor Julian the Apostate (331–363) — nephew of Constantine the Great, who tried to restore paganism in the Roman Empire. In Christian tradition the name entered (despite the apostate emperor) through several early Christian saints — among them Julian of Tarsus (3rd-century martyr) and Julian the Hospitaller (5th century, patron of travellers and pilgrims). It came to the Slavs through Greco-Byzantine and Latin literature; in the Ukrainian tradition Yulian is an old, venerated name.
From Latin Iulianus, a derivative of the gens name Iulius — «belonging to the Julii gens».
