Meaning

Afanasii (Ukrainian: Афанасій) is a male name of Greek origin meaning «immortal», «one who does not die», «eternally living».

Origin & History

The name derives from Ancient Greek Ἀθανάσιος (Athanásios), formed from ἀ- (a-, a negative prefix) and θάνατος (thánatos, «death») — literally «immortal». In Christian tradition the name entered through Saint Athanasius the Great (c. 296–373), Archbishop of Alexandria and one of the greatest Fathers of the Church, the chief defender of the orthodox teaching on the Holy Trinity against Arianism. The Ukrainian form Afanasii is the bookish, ecclesiastical version; the native folk form is Opanas (a phonetic adaptation with the typical Ukrainian substitution f → p). The name came to Kyivan Rus directly with Christianization and has always been one of the most honoured names among the clergy.

Etymology & Roots

From Ancient Greek Athanásios: a- (negative prefix) + thánatos («death») — «immortal».
