Male Ukrainian name (Артур)
Artur (Ukrainian: Артур) is a male name of Celtic (possibly Latin) origin, traditionally interpreted as «bear» or «bear-knight»; sometimes — as «noble, highborn». A name with a thick chivalric and Arthurian-mythological aura.
The origin of the name is disputed. The most common version is Celtic: from the ancient Brittonic artos / arto- («bear»). Another version derives it from the Roman gens name Artorius. The name's worldwide fame was brought by the legendary King Arthur — hero of Breton and Welsh tales and central figure of the vast cycle of medieval Arthurian romances about the Knights of the Round Table, the wizard Merlin, and the Holy Grail. It spread across continental Europe through 12th–13th-century chivalric literature. It came to the Slavs later; in Ukraine Artur spread in the 19th–20th centuries.
Two leading versions: 1) Celtic artos / arto- («bear»); 2) Latin Artorius — an ancient Roman gens name.
