Male Ukrainian name (Богдан)
Bohdan (Ukrainian: Богдан) is a male name of Slavic origin meaning «given by God», «God's gift» — a literal Slavic equivalent of Greek Theodotos / Theodoros.
The name is formed from two Proto-Slavic roots: *bogъ («God») and *danъ («given, granted»). It is a native Slavic calque of Greek Θεόδοτος (Theodotos) — names that spread among the Slavs alongside Christianization. Its most famous bearer in Ukrainian history was Hetman Bohdan-Zynovii Mykhailovych Khmelnytsky (c. 1595–1657), who led the national liberation war of the Ukrainian people and laid the foundations of the Ukrainian Cossack State. Thanks to his historic figure, Bohdan became one of the symbols of Ukrainian national self-awareness.
Proto-Slavic roots: bogъ («God») + danъ («given»); a calque of Greek Theodotos («God-given»).
Equivalents in other languages: Bogdan (Polish, Bulgarian, Serbian, Croatian, Slovene, Macedonian, Romanian, Russian), Bohdan (Czech, Slovak), Bahdan (Belarusian), Bogodanŭ (Old Slavic); Greek equivalent — Theodotos / Феодот.
