Female Ukrainian name (Ірина)
Iryna (Ukrainian: Ірина) is a female name of Greek origin meaning «peace», «tranquillity». One of the oldest and most venerated female names of the Christian tradition.
The name derives from Ancient Greek Εἰρήνη (Eirḗnē), meaning «peace, tranquillity». In ancient Greek mythology, Eirene is the goddess of peace, one of the three Horae. In Christian tradition the name entered through several great martyrs — among them Saint Irene of Macedonia (1st century) and Saint Irene of Corinth (4th century). It is especially venerated by Eastern Christian churches. The name came to Kyivan Rus directly with Christianization; it was borne, among others, by Grand Princess Iryna (daughter of the Swedish konung Olaf, wife of Yaroslav the Wise, who took this name at baptism). The Ukrainian form Iryna is native, with the characteristic initial «і». In the 20th–21st centuries it has been one of the most popular female names in Ukraine.
From Ancient Greek Eirḗnē — «peace, tranquillity»; the name of the ancient Greek goddess of peace.
