Female Ukrainian name (Марія)
Mariia (Ukrainian: Марія) is a female name of Hebrew origin, one of the most venerated names of Christian civilization. Traditionally interpreted as «bitter», «beloved», or «high, exalted» — the exact etymology remains a matter of discussion.
The name derives from Hebrew מִרְיָם (Miryām). Its etymology is disputed; the most common interpretations are: 1) from the root mrh («to be bitter») — «bitterness» (an association with salty sea water or with a bitter fate); 2) from Egyptian mry («beloved»); 3) from an ancient root meaning «exalted». In the Greco-Byzantine tradition the name took the form Μαρία (María); in Latin, Maria. The most important bearer of the name is the Holy Mother of God, the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ and one of the central figures of the Christian faith. Thanks to her veneration, Mariia became the most widespread female name in Christian peoples. In the Ukrainian tradition it has been used since the earliest times; the Ukrainian form Mariia, with the characteristic final -ія, is the traditional native version.
From Hebrew Miryām; etymology disputed — «bitter» (from mrh), «beloved» (Egyptian mry), or «exalted».
