Female Ukrainian name (Марина)
Maryna (Ukrainian: Марина) is a female name of Latin origin meaning «of the sea», «one belonging to the sea», «from a sea-river».
The name derives from Latin Marina — the feminine form of Marinus, formed from the adjective marinus («of the sea»), from mare («sea»). In Roman tradition the name Marinus was given to sailors, fishermen, or people born near the sea. In Christian tradition Maryna entered through several early Christian saints — among them the Great Martyr Marina of Antioch (Margaret, 3rd–4th century), especially venerated as a protectress of women. It came to the Slavs through Greco-Byzantine literature. In the Ukrainian tradition Maryna is an old, venerated name; it was borne by notable cultural figures — among them Maryna Mniszech, wife of two Muscovite pretenders (False Dmitry I and II) in the early 17th century. In the 20th–21st centuries Maryna is one of the popular female names in Ukraine.
From Latin Marina, feminine form of Marinus, from marinus («of the sea») ← mare («sea»).
