Female Ukrainian name (Оксана)
Oksana (Ukrainian: Оксана) is a female name of Greek origin, the native Ukrainian folk form of the name Xenia; it means «hospitable», «welcoming to strangers», «guest».
The name derives from Ancient Greek Ξενία (Xenía), formed from ξένος (xénos, «stranger, guest, foreigner»). In ancient Greek culture, xenia was a sacred custom of hospitality — the obligation to receive and honour a traveller. The Ukrainian folk form Oksana arose through phonetic adaptation: Xenia → Aksenia → Oksana. The name took a special place in Ukrainian culture thanks to Taras Shevchenko's poem «Haidamaky» (1841), in which Oksana is the protagonist's beloved; more broadly, it is the classic Ukrainian heroine's name in literature (Oksana in Gogol's «Christmas Eve» and countless folk songs). In the 20th century Oksana became one of the most popular female names in Ukraine.
From Ancient Greek Xenía («hospitality, guest»), from xénos («guest, stranger»). The Ukrainian form Oksana arose through phonetic adaptation Xenia → Oksana.
Equivalents in other languages: Xenia / Ksenia (English, Greek, Russian), Ksenija (Croatian, Serbian, Slovene, Latvian, Macedonian), Ksenia (Polish, Russian), Aksana (Belarusian), Aksinia (Bulgarian). The native Ukrainian form is Oksana.
