Female Ukrainian name (Олена)
Olena (Ukrainian: Олена) is a female name of Greek origin, traditionally interpreted as «light», «shining», «torch». One of the oldest and most common female names in the Ukrainian tradition.
The name derives from Ancient Greek Ἑλένη (Helénē); its etymology is debated — the most common version connects it with ἕλη (hélē, «torch») and the verb hélein («to shine»), hence «shining, radiant». In Greek mythology, Helen of Troy was the most beautiful woman of her time, on whose account the Trojan War flared up. In Christian tradition the name entered through Saint Helena Equal-to-the-Apostles (c. 250–330) — mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, who according to tradition found the True Cross in Jerusalem. Olena came to Kyivan Rus directly with Christianization; it was borne, among others, by Saint Equal-to-the-Apostles Princess Olha at baptism (c. 890–969). The Ukrainian form Olena is native, with characteristic initial «o-» (in contrast with Russian Yelena).
From Ancient Greek Helénē; etymology disputed — most often derived from hélē («torch») / hélein («to shine») — «shining, radiant».
