Meaning

Omelian (Ukrainian: Омелян) is a male name of Greco-Latin origin, the native Ukrainian folk form of the name Aemilian; it means «gentle», «courteous», «friendly», or, by another etymology, «rival, one who competes».

Origin & History

The name derives from Latin Aemilianus — a derivative of the Roman gens name Aemilius. The most common interpretation of the root aemul- is «one who competes, emulates, strives to equal»; another is from Greek αἱμύλιος (haimýlios, «gentle, friendly»). In Christian tradition Omelian entered through several early Christian saints — the venerable Aemilianus the Confessor and the martyr Aemilianus of Durostorum. The Ukrainian folk form Omelian arose through phonetic adaptation (Emilian → Omelian). Of special importance for Ukraine — Hetman Omelian Popovych and the rebel leader Omelian Hrabets; also Blessed Omelian Kovch, Greek Catholic priest and martyr of the 20th century.

Etymology & Roots

From Latin Aemilianus, a derivative of the gens name Aemilius; root aemul- («to compete, to emulate») or Greek haimýlios («gentle»).
