Male Ukrainian name (Павло)
Pavlo (Ukrainian: Павло) is a male name of Latin origin meaning «small», «humble». Despite the literal modesty, it is one of the most influential names in the Christian tradition.
The name derives from the Latin cognomen Paulus («small»), a common Roman family name. In Christianity the name is inseparably linked with the Apostle Paul (Saul of Tarsus, c. 5–67), one of the chief theologians of early Christianity and author of a significant portion of the New Testament. It came to the Slavic tradition through the Greek form Παῦλος (Paúlos) and Church Slavonic. The Ukrainian form Pavlo is native, with the final «-o» characteristic of Ukrainian (in contrast with Russian Pavel). It was borne by numerous hetmans, including Pavlo Polubotok, acting hetman in the early 18th century, and Pavlo Skoropadsky, hetman of the Ukrainian State in 1918.
From Latin Paulus («small, slight») — a common Roman cognomen; reached the Slavs via Greek Paúlos.
