Male Ukrainian name (Роман)
Roman (Ukrainian: Роман) is a male name of Latin origin meaning «Roman» — «one from Rome».
The name comes from Late Latin Romanus («Roman»), derived from the name of the city Roma (Rome). In the early Christian era several saints bore the name — notably Saint Romanus the Melodist (5th–6th century), considered the founder of Christian hymnography. The name has special meaning for Ukrainians: Prince Roman Mstyslavych (c. 1152–1205) — who united the Galician and Volynian principalities — laid the foundations of the Galicia-Volhynia state, a predecessor of the Kingdom of Rus. In the Middle Ages the name was also borne by rulers of Bulgaria, Kyivan Rus, and Moldavia.
From Late Latin Romanus («Roman»), derived from Roma (Rome).
