Female Ukrainian name (Світлана)
Svitlana (Ukrainian: Світлана) is a female name of Slavic origin meaning «light», «radiant», «one who brings light». A sonorous and sunny name with a transparent etymology.
The name is formed from the Proto-Slavic *světъ («light, world») with the suffix -ana. Although the root is native Slavic, the name Svitlana was introduced into literary use by the Russian poet Alexander Vostokov in the poem «Svetlana and Mstislav» (1802); it was given broader popularity by Vasily Zhukovsky's ballad «Svetlana» (1813) — a work that established the Romantic image of the heroine bearing this name. The name was long absent from the Church calendar of saints (as non-canonical), so at baptism the Church form Photeina was often given («light» — a Greek calque of the meaning). In the Soviet era Svitlana became one of the most popular female names; in Ukraine it remains in use today.
From Proto-Slavic *světŭ («light, world») with the suffix -ana — «light, radiant».
Equivalents in other languages: Svetlana (Russian, Bulgarian, Serbian, Slovene, English), Světlana (Czech), Сьвятлана (Belarusian), Svitlana (Ukrainian); the short form Lana is widespread in many languages. The Greek semantic equivalent is Photeina («light»).
