Male Ukrainian name (Йосиф)
Yosyf (Ukrainian: Йосиф) is a male name of Hebrew origin meaning «may the Lord add», «God will multiply» — a blessing concerning descendants and prosperity.
The name derives from Hebrew יוֹסֵף (Yôsēf), formed from the verb yāsap («to add, to increase»). In the Book of Genesis, Joseph is the beloved son of Jacob and Rachel, sold by his brothers into slavery in Egypt, where he became the second man of the state under Pharaoh. In Christian tradition, Saint Joseph the Betrothed — husband of the Mother of God and earthly father of Jesus — is especially venerated, as is Joseph of Arimathea, who buried Christ. The name came to the Slavs through Byzantine and Church-Slavonic literature (forms Iosif / Yosyf / Yosyp). In Ukraine the name Yosyf / Yosyp is ancient and venerated; it was borne by Metropolitan Josyf Slipyj — head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, cardinal, and prisoner of the Soviet camps (1892–1984).
From Hebrew Yôsēf, from the verb yāsap («to add, multiply») — «may the Lord add».
