Meaning

Yurii (Ukrainian: Юрій) is a male name of Greek origin — the native Ukrainian phonetic form of George — meaning «farmer» or «one who tills the earth».

Origin & History

The name comes from Ancient Greek Γεώργιος (Geōrgios), formed from gē («earth») and ergon («work»). It entered Christian tradition through veneration of Saint George the Victorious (c. 275/281–303), an early martyr who in popular imagination became the archetype of the brave warrior slaying the dragon. In Rus the Greek name George acquired the native phonetic folk form Yurii, which became an independent name in its own right. It was borne by numerous princes (including Yurii Dolgorukii and Yurii II Boleslav), Cossack colonels and hetmans. Yurii remains one of the most popular Ukrainian male names today.

Etymology & Roots

From Ancient Greek Geōrgios: gē («earth») + ergon («work») — «farmer».
